01. Ten Mud Bricks

The bricks for Lukelo Lodge are hand made from a mixture of dirt and water. This mixture is poured into a frame that molds five individual bricks. After drying in the sun for several days, the bricks are baked in a kiln to make them strong and durable. The use of these bricks will give Lukelo Lodge a look that reflects the local architecture of the Njombe area.

02. Five Chickens

Chickens will provide our garden with a chemical-free, nitrogen rich fertilizer and pest control. They will also provide a source of income; the people who take care of the garden will sell their eggs to Lukelo Lodge and the surrounding community. For $10.00, you can buy five chickens for Travel for Change and rest assured that they will do all the free roaming they want!

03. Rocket Stove

A rocket stove is an energy-efficient cooking stove that requires minimal fuel. It is low-cost to install and can run off just a small bundle of twigs. Lukelo Lodge will employ a local chef who will use these stoves to prepare meals for our guests and will train Njombe women to use and build these stoves. Rocket stoves can improve women's lives by reducing the burden of buying firewood and the health effects of inhaling excessive smoke from cooking fires.

Travel for Change aims to make each of our lodges as energy-efficient as possible. 11. Thatch Roof

Each of our five planned bungalows will have traditionally thatched roofs. Our goal is to purchase five acres of land in Njombe, Tanzania on which we will build Lukelo Lodge and plant a large organic garden. We are purchasing this land from Ramanus Mlowe, a local farmer who inherited a larger plot than he is able to farm. Despite his hardwork, his family struggles to meet their basic needs.
